WINDIEST SCHOOLYARD CLEANUP

10/16/2016

by Div. 7

Every week, classes at Surrey Centre clean up the schoolyard garbage to keep the school clean and help the environment.

This week, Division 7 picked up garbage this week on an extremely windy day. They found interesting items such as a beer can, a T-shirt in a tree, a popped balloon, an almost full coffee cup, an owl magnet, and even a big piece of styrofoam wrapped in pink plastic.

The area that had the most garbage was the primary playground, followed by the intermediate playground and gravel field.

Mr. Lee said, “This week had a lot of garbage, and some very unusual items.”

The continued efforts of all classes make Surrey Centre a great place to learn and play.

At Surrey Center Elementary, t
here is a big tree that is about 200 feet tall or so that may fall. If It does, students and staff  in the school could be injured.

Some people say it will fall while other people say it's too thick of a tree but it could fall with more wind.

Evan Jackson said, “It could catch on fire when it falls and the rain wouldn't be strong enough to stop it."

Some students don't want to go on the gravel field as much anymore because they are scared it's going to fall.

Students at Surrey Centre are losing their stuff every day. Why is this happening?

All together there were about 52 sweaters, 22 plastic items and hats, and 6 water bottles displayed in the hallway a few weeks ago.

The librarian, Mrs. Bains, had an idea to help find lost items. "You should put your name on your things,” she said.

And Mrs. Johns said, "I think more boys are losing their things more than girls."
Students may be forgetting their stuff because they are not paying attention

The good news is that any unrecovered items are donated to needy people in the community.

Surrey Center Elementary has introduced a new recycling program this year. Several staff members had opinions about the new system.

Mr. Pearce said, “I think it’s great. Now we don't have any fruit flies.”

Mrs. Henning said, “It's easy and clear what bin is recycling and what bin is garbage.”

Mrs. Schnare said, “I really like it. I don't keep a recycling bin in my classroom anymore and I  don't use my organic bin anymore, only the one in the pod.”

Mr. Lee said, “It's a little confusing but it's better.”

Overall, it seems that most staff at Surrey Centre feel the new recycling system is better than last year’s. Stay tuned for more updates in the future on the recycling program.

Don't get lost in the Maze...the Bose Corn Maze that is. Students, parents and teachers of Division 7 and 8 enjoyed a few hours navigating through the endless twists and turns, as well as trying to solve difficult trivial questions to help find their way out of the confusing labyrinth.

The time was well spent, getting plenty of exercise, working together in teams, and just having fun.

The corn maze covers an area of 25 acres, or about 100000 square metres. The maze began in 1999, and the Bose Farm has been in existence since 1891. It is located at 5948 156 Street in Surrey.
