The Adventures of Ook and Gluk is a second spin-off of Captain Underpants, written by George Beard and Harold Hutchins. So if you liked that book, then you'll probably like this book as well.
The Adventures of Ook and Gluk is a graphic novel set in 500,001 B.C., Caveland,Ohio. The main characters, Ook and Gluk, are best friends. Ook is an adventurous, Caucasian boy with stringy hair. Gluk is also a brave African-American boy with a high afro and a taste for fashion. Both Ook and Gluk enjoy annoying Chief Goppernopper (the villain), the ruler of Caveland. Chief Goppernopper is a big bully that is easily insulted by Ook and Gluk, and shows his frustration every time his henchmen mispronounce his name.
One day, Goppernopper, Ook, and Gluk come across a descendant of Goppernopper. This descendent uses a portal to travel back in time from AD 2222 to steal natural resources. Ook and Gluk take action by using the portal to travel to the future. There, they learn kung fu and stop the evildoers of Goppernopper Enterprises.
Chief Goppernopper hates them for ruining his chances of becoming a rich, big shot and carries out his revenge by forcing Ook’s older sister Gak to marry him. However, if you want to know what happens next, I suggest you read the book.
I enjoyed the plot, characters, silly humour (farts and puke jokes) and the inclusion of martial arts. Although, what I found most interesting is that when you flip the pages, the book appears to become animated. Which is why I think it would appeal to most boys in grades 2-5. Many adults may not like this book because of the way the authors intentionally use poor spelling, grammar, and child-like drawings to target their audience. The fact that this book is not well liked by adults is part of what makes it more attractive to me because it becomes a world where adults don’t intrude.
